Overview

The Oder Delta is one of Rewilding Europe’s local partners and is a cross-border initiative restoring and protecting the unique landscapes along the border of Poland and Germany. Spanning more than 250,000 hectares, including 70,000 hectares of lagoon waters, the delta is one of Europe’s key ecological crossroads.

The Oder Delta is both a biodiversity hotspot and a vital stopover for migrating birds along the East Atlantic Flyway. Its wetlands also store carbon, regulate floods, and strengthen climate resilience. Past human activity damaged many ecosystems, but thanks to wetland restoration and the end of peat cutting, wildlife is thriving again. White-tailed eagles breed at the highest density in Europe, alongside cranes, otters, beavers, salmon, and sea trout. With its location close to Berlin and the Baltic Coast, the region also offers opportunities to link rewilding with sustainable local economies, creating both ecological and social value.

The ERF grant is supporting Rewilding Europe to expand its work in the Oder Delta. It is funding habitat restoration, wildlife monitoring, and community engagement, while also supporting sustainable businesses connected to nature.
