Overview

FUNDAECO, established in 1990, is a leading Guatemalan NGO that conserves biodiversity and promotes sustainable community development. It co-manages protected areas, empowers local ownership, fosters sustainable livelihoods, and advances conservation through research, education, and advocacy.

The Cerro San Gil Protected Area is vital for migratory birds, with over 280 species, and shelters endangered amphibians such as the Guatemala Stream Frog. Despite its protected status, it faces deforestation pressures from cattle ranching, agriculture, and tourism.

The grant is supporting a project to conserve 990 hectares within the area by expanding Full Conservation Zones and establishing biological corridors to create a contiguous protected area either side of a volcanic ridge. This includes lowland rainforest, wetlands, and mangroves. Additionally, the project addresses both human needs and the drivers of deforestation. It generates jobs and supports ecotourism, benefiting local communities.
