Overview
BIOM is one of Croatia’s leading nature conservation NGOs and a partner in the global partnership BirdLife International. They carry out conservation work to protect habitats and save species.
This project aims to restore and conserve still water ecosystems of the Mediterranean karst mountains. Ponds, wells, and torrential streams are almost the only water bodies in the karstic mountains. They act as hotspots of biodiversity. However, they are highly dependent on management, and with people leaving rural areas, these critical ecosystems are inevitably left to succession and finally to disappearance. The project area consists of 3 nature parks and one national park. They will restore at least ten freshwater ecosystems and develop an adaptive management plan for all protected areas involved in the project, creating preconditions for future restoration activities.
