Overview
BirdLife South Africa is a national partner organisation of BirdLife International and is the only dedicated bird conservation organisation in South Africa.
The African-Eurasian Flyway stretches from the Arctic to southern Africa and is one of four major global migration routes for birds. Key sites along the flyway are under threat from habitat loss, illegal hunting, and climate change. Losing these places would have serious consequences for the birds that rely on them to rest, refuel, and breed.
The grant is part ERF’s key grant to Birdlife International. The programme will support conservation across southern Africa, including protecting the Berg River Estuary – one of the country’s most important estuaries and home to its largest saltmarsh. Efforts will focus on habitat restoration, developing blue carbon monitoring tools and skills, and creating case studies to support wider restoration efforts.
